Alcântara
Alcântara é um município do estado brasileiro do Maranhão. Integra a Região Metropolitana de São Luis. Sua população estimada em 2014 era de 21.652 habitantes. Possui uma área de 1457,96 km².
A zona do atual município era habitada por índios tupinambás, numa aldeia chamada Tapuitapera. Os franceses estabeleceram-se aqui no início do século XVII sendo expulsos pelos portugueses. A povoação foi elevada a vila de Santo António de Alcântara em 1648 e foi durante o período colonial um importante centro agrícola e comercial. No século XIX a cidade entra num período de decadência.
Perto de Alcântara, há um centro espacial do qual são lançados os veículos lançadores de satélites no âmbito da Missão espacial completa brasileira. É o CLA – Centro de Lançamento de Alcântara. Na América Latina o CLA é o único concorrente do Centro Espacial de Kourou situada na Guiana Francesa, mas ao contrário deste, o centro espacial brasileiro não opera lançamentos constantes em razão de atrasos logísticos e tecnológicos.
Fica também perto desta cidade a ilha do Cajual, um importante sítio arqueológico do Maranhão. A presença de fósseis de espécies que também viveram na África pode comprovar que a África e a América do Sul já foram um só continente. A cidade também é muito conhecida pelos seus doces de espécie. A festa do Divino Espírito Santo (“festa do Divino”) é bastante difundida no estado, já que são aproximadamente 15 dias de festa durante a qual são servidos de graça “licores” e doces.
